live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. we'll have th >> pay rescue like we've never -- a rescue like we've never seen before, tonight just how bad our drought really is in just a moment. >> first rain has been falling across the entire bay area tonight. this is north beach in san francisco. our chief meteorologist with where the rain is now and where it's headed. >> we've had the rain about eight hours rapidly over the past 20 or 30 minutes. it's scooting out and only the south bay has rainfall. we're drying out in san francisco, north of santa rosa, san mateo county drying out, still raining in milpitas, san jose, saratoga, los gatos, mountain view and palo alto,

but look at all the dry air, rain free in richmond, concord, danville, lafayette and oakland. rainfall totals, ukiah more than 1 1/2 inches, santa rosa, 1/3 and then san francisco 1/8- inch and oakland and san jose less than .1-inch of rain, but there's more coming. the moisture train from hawaii to the bay area is not going anywhere. the rain will be back. we'll talk about our next chance coming up. in awhile. the injured bear was brought tahoe's wildli we'll see how the drought just led to one of the strangest sights we've seen in a while. take a look. >> reporter: the injured bear was brought into the lake tahoe wildlife care section, the same bear that sparked a buzz of reaction and shut down the ski resort for a morning because it was on a ski run. what did you think when you heard about the bear? >> scared. >> we had to wait two hours to

go on the slopes. >> reporter: x-rays taken after the bear was rescued showed no broken bones, just open wounds and trauma. >> anything could have caused it, coyotes, dogs, a fall. >> reporter: when wildlife officials weed this bear, he was 49 -- weighed this bear, he is was 49 pounds. is this an example of yet another impact of the drought? >> yes, definitely. >> reporter: wildlife care officials say in a normal winter this bear likely would have never wandered out onto a ski run this early in march. >> he should still be in hibernation, but this weather is so up and down we're getting chipmunks and robins a month early. the wildlife is reacting to our drought. >> this little guy is expected to make a full recovery before he's released into the wild. tomorrow morning police detectives will be at one bay area school to question students about what andria

borba tells us happened in a bathroom on campus. >> reporter: we are talking about an on campus sexual assault, physical assault and what hercules police call a hate crime tonight. there boy's restaurant covered in fingerprint dust is the scene of what police officers are calling a horrific on campus assault today. it happened just after 11:00 at hercules middle and high school. that's when a 15-year-old transgender teen walked into the boys restroom. when the student left, three 16 to 17-year-old boys walked in. >> forced into the handicap stall and physically and sexually assaulted. >> reporter: afterward the victim walked to the school nurse's office and asked for help. the student is biologically a female but identifies as male was taken to the hospital for treatment and a rape kit. hercules detectives interviewed the victim and questioned students on campus but tonight don't know still who the suspects are. >> many times victims cannot at

least initially identify their attackers in this type of event. >> reporter: the campus is no help. the school does not have security cameras. >> this probably would not have happened at de anza high school because we have 120 cameras on campus there. >> reporter: school board president charles ramsey said the suspects should consider themselves on notice. >> you will be expelled. you will be punished and we will ask that you are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. you can't assault students on campus no matter who they are. >> reporter: now this is the first incident involving a transgender student since a new law was enacted in california about two months ago that allows transgender students to choose which bathroom they use on campus based on which gender they most closely identify with. hercules high school was in compliance with that law. tomorrow morning students can expect a stepped up security presence on campus as hercules police search for those three suspects.

live in hercules, andria borba, kpix5. in november this happened on the same campus, a fight involving another transgender student. a 16-year-old sophomore who identifies as a transgender female fighting with three other students. the contra costa county times reports 94% of the teachers at hercules high have supported a vote of no confidence in the principal saying she created a toxic environment. about a half hour ago crews in concord finally managed to fix a big water main break. water was pouring out of this rupture about 1:00 this afternoon on san miguel road closing the road most of the day. right now san miguel is back open. pink is the color. friends left messages, flowers and a partly cloudy soccer ball at the scene -- pink soccer ball at the scene where a train hit and killed her. the 8th grade athlete was walking with friends. when they saw the train, they

got out of the way, but jenna apparently went back to get her cell phone. >> i can't put it in words. it's really hard on a personal level. >> in every class she was in there was a box you could write letters or notes to her sitting at her desk. >> pink was jenna's favorite color. scary scene at a texas airport today. this plane slammed into a terminal building and broke off its wing. this particular gate is so tight planes have to be towed into place. nobody was hurt. tonight 16,000 russian troops are in crimea, the strategic peninsula that is part of ukraine. here's the very latest. russia reiterated its demands, restoration of the deal reached two weeks ago for a national unity government and of new elections in december. russia is also demanding two ukrainian warships surrender. the u.s. and european union are putting together plans for harsh sanctions against russia. a few hours ago president obama

held a high level cabinet meeting at the white house. earlier today the president said russia is violating international law. it's not that easy. joe: >> i think the strong condemnation that it's received from countries around the world indicates the degree to which russia is on the wrong side of history on this. >> those images of russian troops invading another sovereign country are striking, but keep in mind the new ukrainian government has also made provocative moves such as repealing a longstanding law that had made russian the official language. bottom line, the ukrainians i spoke to tonight say it's complicated. of russia until 19- 54, when the soviets gat to inside the new toward market in san francisco's little russia district there are as many opinions about putin's decision to invade crimea as there are types of sausages for sale. >> reporter: he says they're

oppressing russians. >> this is ridiculous because my dad is ethnic russian. he has never been oppressed. >> reporter: elena said her family and friends on her social media feed have mixed feelings about the russian troops. >> their opinions are divided, but all of them are alarmed. even those who are kind of happy about putin's interference are still alarmed that that could lead to civil war. this i think is not bad. >> reporter: but isabel solodky from odessa ukraine supports what she believes is a temporary russian effort to achieve stability. >> they just want to help. >> reporter: russians are there to help? >> yeah. this is what i'm thinking. >> reporter: katz, a neuroscience grad student at bradford is from crimea and says the russian invasion has turned what was up until now a philosophical debate into a full blown crisis. >> there were people who said women want to be with russia

and people -- we want to be with russia and people said we want a stronger tie with the west, but i think once a country is invaded i think it's impossible to make an argument for that. >> a little context, crimea was part of russia until 1954 when the soviets gave it to ukraine. even then it was semi independent with its own parliament. nearly 80% of the people in crimea say russian is their latest language. the crisis is hurting anyone with a 401k. the dow fell 450 points today. one state lawmaker was convicted of voter fraud, the other charged with bribery. so why are you still paying their salaries? says.. that's not the whole story. >> a teenager sues her parents for refusing to pay her college tuition. tonight her dad says that's not the whole story. >> and how did a guy wind up stuck inside ,,,,,,

in bay area politics is out. oakland mayor jean quan made announcement tonight: one of the most powerful players in bay area politics is out. oakland mayor jean kwon made the announcement tonight. assistant city administrator fred blackwell will replace city administrator deanna santana. blackwell starts at noon tomorrow, no official word why santana is leaving, but sources tell the oakland tribune kwon wanted her out. tonight one state senator faces federal bribery charges,

another is convicted of voter fraud, but they're still getting paid. how is that possible? here's what rob mcallister found out. >> ron calderon received approximately $100,000 in bribes. >> reporter: los angeles senator ron calderon is on a leave of absence slapped with federal corruption charges, but he's not the only one. senator rod ryder convicted of voter fraud is also collected a salary each being paid nearly $8,000 a month to stay home, money that comes from your tax dollars. >> in this situation where you have somebody forced to leave his office, he's no longer doing the people's business, therefore i think there's an open question as to whether or not they should continue to get paychecks. >> reporter: this professor of george law school says the state must be careful taking away pay too early in the legal process. >> it could also look bad to kick people out before they're

convicted. >> reporter: but it's argued there ought to be tougher standards. >> public officials should always be held to a higher standard. they are acting on the public's behalf. >> reporter: there are no specific rules about forfeiting salaries. a senate leader currently darrell steinberg is allowed to use his discretion when determining whether a lawmaker should get paid or not. >> consistently the legislative bodies have not expelled members until they're proven guilty. so until they're expelled they're treated as if they're still on the job to a certain extent. >> reporter: the last time a senator was expelled was 109 years ago, a system that does not appear likely to change any time soon. >> the two senators are no longer actively holding office, so the democrats lost their super majority in the senate. they will need republican approval before passing any tax hikes. not an easy feat getting this bright blue corvette zr1

out of a giant sinkhole at the national corvette museum. you'd think the damage would be worse, but workers got it upright on its wheels, crank it up, started right up and they drove it away. that sinkhole swallowed eight very rare valuable corvettes last month. the museum surveillance cameras caught the whole thing. those cars were worth about $1 million. quite the rescue at a local radio station today. now a man got stuck inside a wall at the building that houses kgo radio. that hole is where san francisco firefighters found him. they had to use sledgehammers to break through the drywall to get him out. >> it's crazy. i stuck my head in there and i can't figure out any way he got in. so it's a mystery. >> or why. the man described as wearing shorts and nice news was taken to the hospital to be checked out. so -- shoes was taken to the hospital to be checked out. so far nobody will say how he

got into this wall. police say this man tried to break into a car at a home on totem court. he was seen in a small gold suv. police are looking for these two individuals. they're suspected of stealing a south bay man's suv and leaving his dog inside for several days. the dog eventually died. the theft happened last weekend at a wal-mart in gilroy. the suv turned up four days later in san jose. michael mcveigh's 15-year-old akita kako was in the back seat dead and her owner is heartbroken. >> if i could get my hands on him, it wouldn't be fun, at least for them. >> a wal-mart surveillance camera got this shot of those suspects. this story has a lot of people talking. tonight a new jersey teenager is suing her parents for refusing to pay her college tuition, but her father tells christine sloan that's not the

whole story. >> we're being sued by our child. i'm dumbfounded. so is my wife and other daughters. >> reporter: his daughter rachel canning is an honor student and cheerleader and in court papers alleges her parents abandoned her when she turned 18 and now refuse to pay for her college. her father tells a different story. >> i know was a, a good kid, b, an incredibly rebellious teen and she's getting some terrible information. >> reporter: he claims she ran away in november because she didn't want to follow house rules. >> there's very few things. there's minor chores and curfew which is usually after 11:00 at night. >> reporter: rachel did not want to be interviewed and is staying with her best friend's family, attorney, who is funding the lawsuit. rachel who has a $20,000 scholarship said the university of vermont, a private college, is her first choice. are you refusing to pay for her college education? >> i reject the whole premise. we have a college fund available to her, but it's the

of goingshopping and getting a high end bill. me and my wife are distraught. >> both sides will be in court tomorrow. rachel wants to go to college to become a biomedical engineer. 1 reporter was sent out to cover the weather. >> instead the weather covered him. take a look. >> reporter: there goes a couple plows demonstrating what i said hitting us. there you go. here comes another one. >> he seemed pretty cool. the people around were screaming, though. this was in new jersey. the reporter was about 20 feet from the roadway when that happened. he later joked a reporter from a rival station must have been driving the plow. >> he did not miss a beat. >> live tv, keep going. >> hey, can you get me with the plow? bring more.

they've had such a horrible winter back east, storm after storm. for a while we kind of felt guilty talking about sunshine and 70 because that's all we had. we needed some rain. now later when it is sunny and 70, we enjoy it. live look outside, kpix5 hi-def doppler lots of rainfall for the central valley, great news. it is raining steadily in stockton and modesto. that was our rainfall a couple hours ago now moving out. the clearing line it now down to san jose and out to livermore. the other will be in the next 20 or 30 minutes. this is four hours of weather history. we've had plenty of rainfall throughout the evening. some parts of the north bay received a significant amount. just updated the rainfall totals. 1/2-inch of rain petaluma, 1/5 of 1 inch in san jose, .16 in

mountain view, .13-inch of rain. we're beginning to see the end of the rainy season. march is kind of the transition month. by april we're pretty dry, only average about 1 1/2 inches. we'll make up any more of this rainfall deficit and drought, it has to happen now. good news is, the atmosphere is perfectly set up for more raffle because that ridge of high pressure is blocking the -- rainfall because that ridge of high pressure is block being the rain from hitting mention -- blocking the rain from hitting mexico. we'll have showers overnight. next up is thursday, another low pressure area. it hits us, rainfall. after that the next low is sunday. it will hit us and we'll get rainfall again. it's just a matter of how many storms are out there because they're all heading in our direction. that ridge is gone. the rain will not be as heavy this week. we got it tonight. we'll get it thursday and again sunday. it will be mild and humid and cloudy the next several days.

general manager trent balkes jim harbaugh came out strong tonight about reports of his contract and his relationship with general manager trent baalke, his message not true. harbaugh with two years left on his contract at $5 million per year told sports illustrated he doesn't want more money, power and has a productive working relationship with trent baalke. he said there was zero chance he'd leave the team before his contract expired. said, "i have never said to anybody i want to be the highest paid coach in football. i make plenty of money. i told my owner i don't want more power. i want to coach the team." one person who did get a payday? anquan boldin signed a two year deal. he said the chronicle story of harbaugh's act has won thin among players is not true. >> i kind of laughed because it was exactly that. i don't think anybody in our
